Class of 2020

Plans to Honor the Class of 2020

Our PHS administrative team has been working to plan alternative arrangements for many milestones that typically occur at the end of a PHS student's senior year.  We'll post updates to this page as more information becomes finalized.

Graduation/Senior Affirmation Day on June 9th

cap
June 9th is Graduation/Senior Affirmation Day – As announced on May 5th, we are planning a Virtual Graduation Ceremony at 7 PM on YouTube and Parkland TV (Channel 65 on RCN and Channel 264 on Service Electric, or 102.9 for digital subscribers).  Additionally, we'll re-broadcast all of the virtual award ceremonies from May (more info below).  We'll also broadcast the Senior Shout Out slide show that is being compiled by the PHS Parkland TV and Film Studio for the Parkland TV and Film Instagram page (see below for more info).  The annual Senior Slide Show Video, which recaps the entire senior year, and a Senior Recognition Presentation (see below for description) will also be broadcast that day. A full schedule will be shared at a later date.

We know that everyone wishes we could have an in-person graduation ceremony but we feel strongly that this rite of passage needs to happen on schedule as our students have many different plans after graduation which is why we are planning to have a Virtual Ceremony on June 9th.

Yearbook and Diploma Distribution June 10 & 11

Diplomas and yearbooks will be distributed from 4:30 - 7 PM on Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11. To keep this as orderly as possible, diplomas will be distributed in a specific time slot and grouped by students’ guidance counselors. To keep the process moving as efficiently as possible, please report to diploma pick up during your time slot only. In order to expedite the process, please adhere to the following instructions:

  • Pull up to the school’s front circle
  • Stay in your car
  • Someone will ask for your graduate’s name
  • The graduate’s diploma and yearbook will be handed to the graduate, unless you prefer they are both placed in your trunk.
We want this to be a celebratory time for you and your family! Please feel free to decorate your car and/or have your graduate wear his/her cap and gown. There will be two photographers here. One will be taking pictures when your graduate receives their diploma in your car. A second photo opportunity will be staged in the parking lot by the gym/pool entrance.  It will include a special backdrop and we’ve hired Gradimages to take professional photos.  All pictures are optional and social distancing guidelines must be followed. While we expect to see single family households congregate for a picture, we do not want students to congregate with peers. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines!

During diploma pick-up, everyone should access the front of the school from Cedar Crest Blvd. When you drive onto campus from Cedar Crest Blvd, make the first right and follow directions from our staff.  The pick-up schedule is as follows:

Virtual Awards/Scholarship Recognition Events & Performances

Academic, athletic and arts awards are a favorite tradition and include surprise awards for some seniors.  Award presentations debut on the Parkland YouTube Channel and Parkland TV (Channel 65 on RCN and Channel 264 on Service Electric, or 102.9 for digital subscribers) and will be re-broadcasted throughout the summer and linked below:

May 14 - College Athlete Recognition Video - recognizing all athletes planning to play a sport in college (or view the list)
May 18 - Academic Awards Video (or view the list)
Scholarship Recognition Ceremony Video (or view the list)
May 27 - Athletic Awards
May 28 - Visual & Performing Arts Awards, (or view the list)
June 4 - Senior Cabaret Performances

We were pleased that the PHS Spring Musical cast, crew and pit were able to celebrate what would have been their opening night on April 15th via a virtual meeting that included this cast performance.  Additionally, on April 17th, 46 schools throughout the Lehigh Valley honored senior athletes and healthcare workers by lighting up their stadiums during the Friday Night Lights event.  The scoreboard displayed 20:20 with 19 yards to go and a 4th down to signify that COVID-19 is on its final down.  All scoreboards and fields were lit up in Parkland in their honor and many posted Parkland Pride pictures and comments on the District's Facebook page.  Service Electric also did a nice TV story about the event.  The Visual and Performing Arts Department's annual Festival of the Arts is celebrated in this video

Cap and Gown Distribution

Caps and gowns were distributed on Friday, May 22nd.

If you were unable to pick up your child’s cap and gown at your designated time, please email Crystal George at georgec@parklandsd.org. Thank you!

Throwback Thursdays on Facebook

Starting Thursday, April 23rd, we will ask parents to post pictures of their seniors from the past.  (Hint:  we'll be celebrating PTO event days, arts/concert events, sporting events, etc. from the Class of 2020 days of their youth).  Stay tuned to the PHS Facebook page for instructions!

Senior Graduation Lawn Signs

lawn sign image

We are pleased to announce that PHS and the Parkland Education Foundation have worked together to fund and create lawn signs that will honor every PHS graduate!  These signs will be delivered by being placed on the lawn of every senior's residence by PHS and Parkland Education Foundation staff and the local police departments.  For those of you who have already purchased a yard sign, the Foundation will offer refunds, or you can choose to have your purchase put towards the Foundation's Celebrate Innovation Staff Grant Program and COVID-19 Emergency Teacher Grant Program.   The Foundation will be emailing those who have purchased signs already with more information.  The signs will be delivered and placed on lawns by mid-May. They look like the one below and will be customized with each student's first name:

Senior Recognition Webpage

We are creating a Senior Recognition webpage within the PHS website that will honor all seniors and include a teacher "shout out" message for every PHS senior.  We'll email all students and families when this is complete.

Senior Shout Outs on ParklandTVFilm Instagram

A request for seniors to submit information on Schoology was posted on Friday, April 17th.  Any information that is submitted by seniors will be used for Senior Shout Outs that will be posted on the ParklandTvFilm Instagram feed and possibly used in the Senior Video. Students can upload their information for that presentation here: https://forms.gle/YZji4gjRVo3DEk8w9.  View the Instagram page here:  https://www.instagram.com/parklandseniors2020/.
